British food, best in the world

Top chefs tell us their go to snacks.

Yes, of course there’s the usual poncey crap (special type of Spanish very lightly pickled mussel on special Spanish crisps, Lord forgive the poseur) but a couple that work:

Jason Atherton
I like prawn cocktail crisp sandwiches with grated cheddar and HP Sauce.

Acshully, not quite wholly sure there. Salt and vingear perhaps…..

Hannah Evans
Spread Marmite across a tortilla wrap, sprinkle on some grated cheddar, fold it in half and zap it in the microwave for 15 seconds until the cheese has melted.

Ah, yes, now that does work.

Substitute the Marmite for Bovril and it’d be even tastier.

Better still…. Warburtons white toastie (partially toasted) then spread with butter and Bovril, topped off with cheese and back under the grill. Food of champions.

Bovril & soft cheese roll or sandwich. That’s often my lunch, with a yogurt and a few roast peanuts.

When the wind is in the south-east, as it is today, it brings the smells of the scotch egg factory. Wonderful. I don’t know that it’s a particularly British snack but neither do I care.

rk @ 10.17, but on November 2020 our lords and masters told us a scotch egg constituted a “substantial meal” rather than a ‘snack’:
“Environment Secretary George Eustice told LBC Radio that Scotch eggs would constitute such a meal “if there were table service”.

TBF, the concept of ‘a substantial meal’ existed in pub legislation long before the Covid fiasco. It related to, among other things, whether a 14 year old could have an alcoholic drink: yes, if bought by an adult and consumed with ‘a substantial meal’.
The lockdown treatment of this law, by the scotch egg story, was an illustration of how just low the journaloid ‘profession’ has become.

Toast with a banana squashed on it: if time permits put back under the grill for a little. Warmed banana is lovely.

Anyway; who can beat Sardines on toast, Poached eggs on mashed potato, or Weird Ed’s special – bacon sandwich?

If you grow them yourself so they actually taste good – a tomato sandwich with a good slice of cheddar.

I would bang on about the marvels of Pork Pies but the last one I had gave me vomiting and diarrhoea. Thanks, M& S. Whereas when I lived in Yorkshire …

And I must say that what the Cumbrians call “Scotch Pies” are pretty damned good.

Chernny,

What are “dirty beans”? I like beans on toast but with a good dash of Worcestershire sauce added before they go in the microwave.

Scrambled eggs with wholegrain mustard. Make them and when they’re nearly done, a butter and a dollop of wholegrain mustard.

I used to do sausage and marmalade sandwiches which are lovely, but then I discovered Tracklement’s onion marmalade. Add a little near the end to the pan, then a bit more if needed in the sandwich.

Also, if you want a great bit of kit, get the toaster bags from Lakeland. Make up a sandwich (preferably with cheese, put it in the bag, put the bag in the toaster. They only cost a couple of quid and you reuse them.

Otto @ 7.18 LOL.

Out and about – Greggs Cheese and bacon wrap.

At home – Smoked bacon, brown sauce (Daddies / HP) in a buttered Sheldons ‘oven bottom muffin’.

” Greggs Cheese and bacon wrap.”

Oh, yes, especially when it’s still warm and squidgy.

I had a colleague who came back from the pub a bit peckish. Unfortunately he had nothing in the fridge except some cheddar and lemon curd. He thought, “Why not?” and made a sandwich. I’ve tried it. It’s actually pretty good.

Dirty beans

Fry streaky bacon to crispy break up into peices. Remove and fry onions in same pan. Warm beans. Then bung them all in the beans add your favourite bbq sauce and stir.

Tortilla, spread half (generously) with spicy mango chutney, half with real full-fat Greek yogurt. Distribute half a dozen or so slices of semi-crispy dry cured smoked streaky bacon on one half. Fold the tortilla along the boundary between the chutney and the yogurt to a semi-circle, then again to make a quarter-round. Eat. Reflect with pride on your consumption of yogurt as a healthy probiotic.
