Assata Shakur, an icon of Black liberation who was exiled to Cuba, dies aged 78
Shakur spent decades exiled after she was convicted of killing a state trooper in 1977 and escaped from prison
Exiled – in my book at least – would mean that the US Govt had stated “You may not live here” and told her she was thrown out.
Acshully, she was on the run from righteous justice. Which ain’t exile.
Living in exile.
No longer living in exile.
Formerly known as…
told her she was thrown out.
“Get your Ass ata here”.
Communism, for Assata Shakur (real name Joanne Byron),obviously meant having two opposing ideas at the same time:
Shakur wrote in her 1987 memoir, Assata: An Autobiography. “Only a fool lets somebody else tell him who his enemy is.”
“One of the most important things the Party did was to make it really clear who the enemy was,” Shakur wrote in her memoir…
Lol.
Anyhoo good riddance…
Bit of a waste of a life, really. Born in one of the best countries in the world, end up in Cuba. Probably made fuck all difference to civil rights, which were mostly won by arguments, by talented black people becoming respected.
Well, the Cubans having to put up with her was certainly a benefit to the Yanks.
The US knew she was in Cuba and attempted to have her extradited.
Spock says attempted extradition and exile doesn’t compute.
Forget it, Jake. It’s the Guardian.
Yeah she was exiled like Roman Polanski currently is. I.e. running from criminal charges, to a state that sees poking its finger in the eye of the US to be amusing.
