The migrant who returned to the UK on a small boat less than a month after being deported to France on the “one in, one out” scheme has submitted a modern slavery claim in a bid to block his removal.
The unnamed Iranian migrant has claimed that he was a victim of trafficking during his time in France.
Doesn’t Laddie have an inventive lawyer?
A lawyer we are paying, of course.
Much like how politicians would talk about fixing our relationship with the EU, what the two main parties do is just kicking the can down the road. Announce a scheme, say it will fix the problem. But it won’t. Repeat.
The only real answer is to accept that the post-WW2 arrangement doesn’t work. It was never meant for a mass of Iranians. The costs of travel meant only the elite came. You got the Emperor Haile Selassie living in Bath, because that was in Britain’s interest.
Which is why the only thing that will actually work is ending the general right and replacing it with specific permission. The Home Secretary decides that certain individuals or named groups can come in. We want to get people who know how to destroy Iran’s nuclear programme. Or the leaders in exile. Or the women and children from countries where we are supporting a war (like Ukraine).
We’ll get there, eventually. I expect a lot more can kicking all around for a while though.
I saw the Sage of Ely with Poleannski – and, well – it was natural to report the sighting here ….

Heavens, he’s a pompous get isn’t he?
A lawyer we are paying, of course.
And the opposing lawyer and eventually the judge hearing the arguments.
It’s a win, win, win business.
So, the court finds that he’s been trafficked, and repairs the damage by returning him home to Iran. Simples.
