Always fun, these descriptions

Moderate socialist Antonio Jose Seguro came out on top in the first round of Portugal’s presidential election on Sunday, followed by the far-right leader Andre Ventura, and the two will face off in a runoff on 8 February.

The “far-right” is somewhat to the left of Macmillan and the moderate socialist just wants to starve the kulaks slowly…..

Ahh, the moderate socialists. Are they the ones that Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn wrote about in such glowing terms? And is Mr Ventura a far right socialist like Mr Hitler was?

In the spirit of modern Safetyism and in accord with the Holy Precautionary Principle wouldn’t a wise nation kill all the socialists?

This would work if there was an association between genes and socialism and so a good culling would dilute the problem for a century or more.
I doubt there is a link: grandchildren of Henry Ford were anti-capitalist, and there’s the saying that being socialist at 20 shows you have a heart, but being capitalist by 30 shows you have a brain. And there’s PJ O’Rourke remarking that he was a socialist until he saw the deductions from his first pay check (I wish UK pay checks showed all deductions but they don’t sadly)

I’m trying to imagine what, in the eyes of the Groan, might be a “moderate socialist”…

Something like China? …ish?
Something like the cloggie Socialist Party? They’re not *quite* Communist…. in public…

The Groan is so far Out There that any pragmatic politician with socialist roots would immediately class as “neo-liberal” in their eyes. ( And a Traitor to the Cause….)

Real moderate socialism has never been tried.

We’ve never had REAL socialism. Probably just as well as ‘almost’ socialism managed to kill around 100 million people.

In the past, Iberia hasn’t done badly in the growth stakes, partly thanks to a strong ability to milk the EU for investment. But as socialism bites harder, the Golden Age is over, with few opportunities for graduates. If that’s what the great unwashed want, let them have it, good and hard.

Seguro seems to have been living fat of the state teat for his entire life. A university drop out who seems to have never had a job outside politics.

Let’s try to figure out whose side Guardian is on.

Bookmark this article for when they claim to be unbiased . . . fair . . . balanced.

Under every article online? In their Begging Footer?

They are also under permanent assault by shadowy extreme-right forces, in constant fear of censorship, deplatforming, defunding… the list goes on…

We had one of those …discussions.. about “conspiracy theories” recently… That Groan Footer is a fine example of such.
