Donald Trump said on Friday that he expected more people whom he considers his political enemies to face criminal charges, a day after the justice department indicted former FBI director James Comey and faced a torrent of criticism for enacting the president’s campaign of retribution.
So that’s one way of telling the story.
Trump’s blunt remarks underscored the perilous moment for his political adversaries, given that the justice department pressed ahead with criminal charges against Comey, even though it was widely seen – inside and outside the administration – to be a weak case.
The indictment against Comey, filed in federal district court on Thursday in Alexandria, Virginia, alleged that he misled lawmakers in September 2020 when he stood by his previous testimony to Congress claiming he had never authorized anyone at the FBI to leak to reporters.
But what if he did lie to Congress? He should get away with it? Or not?
And, erm, isn’t in court where this is all supposed to be decided?
As we have learnt by now.
The Process is the Punishment.
Although Republicans historically have lost interest on the long slog required to really punish their prey.
Apparently the evidence is weak and he’s in front of a Biden judge so expect the case to be thrown out as soon as a jury has been empanelled so the case can’t then be appealed.
But that doesn’t matter because as Otto says, the process is the punishment.
And, erm, isn’t in court where this is all supposed to be decided?
Sir Keir said: “Be in no doubt, those that have participated in this violence will face the full force of the law. The police will be making arrests. Individuals will be held on remand, charges will follow and convictions will follow”.
It sounded an awful lot like pre-judging at the time.
If he’d added, “And I hate Lucy Connolly because she’s white, Christian and heterosexual!” a lot of other mysteries would have been solved…
Posted before, but….Peruvian President and Latin American strongman Oscar Denavides:
“for my friends, everything; for my enemies, the law.”.
As the Commie Libtards made clear while persecuting, er sorry prosecuting Trump during the regime of the almighty autopen “No-one is above the law”.
They started this, not Trump.
Except a crowd of people pardoned by Trump quite clearly are above the law to some extent.
Pants on fire.
Guardian puts their words in Trump’s mouth. Trump targets law breakers. Guardian notes they are his political enemies, but says it as Trumps words.
You don’t hate the Guardian enough.
There is a prima facie case against Comey. He told Congress things that are demonstrably false.
Incentives matter. So change the incentives for next time. Hang the bastard if that’s legal.
Anent the FBI: did you see that it’s just been revealed that they had 274 armed secret agents at the so-called J6 protest? I suppose the hope must have been that a few protestors would be armed so that a gun fight could be brought about and then everyone (except the 274) could be charged with sedition or worse.
A bit like sending armed FBI agents to Mar-a-Lago presumably in hopes that a Trump bodyguard would panic and draw a gun so that, alas, Trump would be killed in the “cross fire”.
They are pretty transparent, these fuckers, aren’t they?
A lot of them were armed but not carrying proper ID apparently. Lucky the rozzers didnt shoot a few or they didn’t open fire on each other.
“But what if he did lie to Congress? He should get away with it? Or not?”
The former of course, he’s a Democrat. Thats the rules in the US of A.
Just like in the UK where Darren Grimes was dragged through the courts for years by the Electoral Commission for a Brexit related non-crime, while Morgan McSweeney gets let off from a slam dunk breach of electoral rules without so much as a rap on the knuckles because he’s a Lefty.
