How long does anyone expect this to last?

The main Palestinian factions have said they have agreed that an independent committee of technocrats would take over the running of Gaza after Hamas said it had received “clear guarantees” from mediators that “the war has effectively ended”.

A joint statement published on the Hamas website said the groups had agreed in a meeting in Cairo to hand “over the administration of the Gaza Strip to a temporary Palestinian committee composed of independent ‘technocrats’, which will manage the affairs of life and basic services in cooperation with Arab brothers and international institutions”.

Myself, about as long as those claims of famine which everyone’s gone very quiet about as soon sa piccies show an unhappy but not starving population.

But, you know….

It will last until the Technocrats do something Hamas doesn’t like.
Meanwhile Hamas will be Taking Notes…..

I reckon this peace will last by the simple expedient of Hamas having executed everyone.

It’s not exactly an economically prosperous place full of brain surgeons and rocket scientists and Iran can go pay people a load of money to lob bombs around.

That’s all you really have to understand. If Iran wasn’t paying people, there would probably be peace. Always comes back to Sollozzo in The Godfather: Blood is a big expense. Most people would rather not be killing other people. It’s dirty, dangerous and it haunts those that do it. They want to make a lot more money for doing it than flipping burgers.

There isn’t the incentive within Gaza, but Iran puts a thumb on the scale.

This is what most of our coverage doesn’t get into. Everyone talks about religion. Not that the families of suicide bombers get a huge amount of money. So yes, parents are then proud of their sons. They have helped the rest of the family. They might then talk about Allah, but it’s really about the family wealth. The rest of the family gain from the sacrifice of the son.

It’s all about who has the power in the region: Saudi or Iran. Yemen, Lebanon, Gaza. They’re like those cold war fights between Russia and the USA.

Last? You’re kidding. One terrorist entity wants all the land from east to west: “from the river to the sea”. The other wants all the land from south to north: from the “brook of Egypt” to the Euphrates.

There’s not much room for compromise there and anyway compromise would imply some degree of trust. No chance.
