Er, no … the Nomenklatura will have access to the foreign-currency shops like Harrods that cater to tourists. All the proles can buy potatoes and beetroot from the state shops.

I warned our family’s younger generation about capital controls – they could scarcely believe that they had ever happened. Their instinct was that you couldn’t do that nowadays. My instinct was that you should make sure your investments are spread across at least three countries.
Unfortunately I haven’t a clue how I could achieve that for us: how could we store cash or equities in CHF or SG? Dunno. Is it simple, cheap, safe? Dunno.
Ah well, if it hadn’t been for capital controls after The War, I’d have been a Canadian.
