Interesting thing when my father went into hospital was that he got what I dubbed the “dead man’s breakfast” – they came round in the afternoon and you ordered food for your bed for 24 hours – so you got what the previous occupant ordered even though there was a new person there.
By the way – I think all hospital food is terrible – in Germany it is bland just like the British stuff.

JW: Yes, that’s exactly what happened to me when I was last in hospital.
@ JW, I was in hospital in Germany on three or four occasions and found their food perfectly pleasant. Plus they’d have a ‘shop’ on the ward which sold beer for half an hour in the morning and afternoon. And a TV lounge where you kid sit and smoke and drink and chat all day long.

It works for Subway, McD’s, etc. because they make things people want to buy, and we have a choice between them.
If you were told that all you were permitted to eat was Subway and nothing else, you’d be annoyed. And that’s would still be tastier than something concocted by a public committee – almost certainly designed to suit the socialist Scottish palate. Ugh!
It would be good if the NHS bothered to ensure that the food they do provide is eaten by the patients – the nurses think its beneath them to feed patients nowadays, so lots of old people who struggle to eat unaided just starve…………………..

The NHS could commission fast food firms to come up with a version of their meals that can be cooked by the hospitals. Then people could have familiar food to eat without having to have a hospital exclusively Subway or Macdonalds or whatever.

It’s the wonder if the world, apparently. Even if it does kill more people through negligence than die on the roads.
If hospital menus were provided by Subway, McDs, KFC and Domino’s there would be a lot fewer patients suffering from malnutrition.

No, haven’t you noticed that a lot of vegetarians have to take vitamin pills and food supplements to make up for the deficiencies in their diet and remember that those recovering from operations need a high-protein diet.

German hospitals are a variable feast – it depends on the management – in my town there are hospitals with good reputations for x, y and z and one of the variables is food. The one my partner was in had good personal nursing care – the nurses were first class, the food was awful but then my partner is vegetarian.
When you get in an ambulance they ask you which hospital you want to go to – and try and get you in to that one – they didn’t succeed in our case – the good ones are popular.
At one point on the admission process in Germany my partner wanted a drink of water – in the UK I would have expected tap water from a paper cup – in this hospital – the nurse went out and brought back a bottle of still or sparkling mineral water and asked which one we wanted. There are differences and differences of expectations too
