Ritchie and campaign finance

So why Trump? I think the clue is in the name: his money has trumped everyone else. That and blatant and nasty populism. If ever there was evidence that money and good government are an unlikely mix then this is it.

Jeesus. Trump has raised less and spent less than just about everyone else in the race. Sheesh.

And all of this does, at least in part, fly in the face of what many seem to want. Look at the stories about Leicester City: one of the things that appeals to many about their success is that it has not been unduly bought. This is a relatively cheaply assembled team based on talent, team spirit and shared endeavour. Of course there are egos involved; it would be impoissible for it to be otherwise. But what has worked so well is the ability to work together.

The Trump approach and that of the libertarian right is the antithesis of this. That policy of self interest saps the spirit and destroys the collective will on which most things of value are built.

Headdesk…..

  1. He knows all about blatant and nasty populism. Hang the banks! And Starbucks!

Strange how people like him switch from the rankest populism to the highest sneering without seemingly being aware of it.

  2. A few months ago Trump had spent about $300 per vote to become the leader, and Jeb Bush had spent $5000 per vote to get to last place.

  3. “And all of this does, at least in part, fly in the face of what many seem to want.”

That must be why Trump has got more votes than any Republican primary candidate ever.

  4. Tim said: “Trump has raised less and spent less than just about everyone else in the race.”

Trump is used to spending his own or borrowed money so has spent well. His competitors are used to spending other people’s money without consequence, so couldn’t help but spend poorly.

Gamecock said: “Success outside the commune is invalid.”

None more so than the success of another commune. The Make ‘Merica Great Again collective must be stopped.

  5. “the collective will on which most things of value are built.”

I guess that would the Triumph Of The Will?

  6. As usual, the Murphatollah is a fact-free zone. I can’t face reading his ghastly blog today, but I imagine his slavishly adoring coterie will be applauding every pathetic word of this feeble post of his. Time for another glass of vintage cava…

  7. “blatant and nasty populism”

    aka Democracy.

Does anyone remember the “Court of Public Opinion”? “The Voice of the People” or “The People Have Spoken”?

  8. https://www.opensecrets.org/pres16/

    Hilary Clinton 255 million
    Bernie Sanders 182 million
    Jeb Bush 154 million
    Ted Cruz 142 million
    Marco Rubio 117 million
    Ben Carson 80 million
    Donald Trump 51 million

Own money is 36 million for Trump.

So Trump spent less than four of the other Republican candidates. Money doesnt talk.

I think Ritchie can, for once, be forgiven for believing a myth – because everyone’s claiming that at the moment. It’s not true, of course: Leicester’s team cost £57m by the most generous assessments, and that’s before the annual wage bill of ~£100m.

Leicester were still underdogs, of course, but in fact they only beat a handful of teams who spent significantly more than them, and most teams in the league spent less.

  10. ‘The Make ‘Merica Great Again collective must be stopped.’

Stopped from what, making America great again?

  11. Ritchie must be counting all the billions of free TV airtime the Liberal MSM gave Trump. You know, the airtime and column inches where people like Ritchie told the American public that they were petty, small-minded, sexist, racist pigs who should do as they are told and ignore that nasty man, Trump.

The same Trump who used the airtime to say: ‘HEY! Are you sick of the MSM saying you are petty, small-minded, sexist, racist pigs who should do as they are told and ignore me?’

Wonder how that worked for them?

Tim is from Wessex, not Mercia. So he’d agree. Offa’s Dyke and all that.

    Beautifully put, Rob.

  14. Trummp is not a woman , he is not black , he is not green , he is not trendy. What more do you want.

From Dickie’s point of view, I would guess yes. A risk to any collective is another collective being successful. The will of the public is celebrated when it supports leftist policies but, to those of the left, the will of the public is to be resisted when it supports policies that go against current leftist consensus.(eg securing the USA/Mexico border)

Trump has built ample support. He is not alone and he does not seem to be the bitter, racist, Cheeto skinned, billionaire egomaniac that some want the public to see Trump as.

I’m assuming he’s not referring to things like sugar beet subsidies(self interest) or section 8(destroys the collective will by not allowing a man to live with the mother of his child).

I would likely go down for Life if I ever met Andrew Dickie in person – as close to pure evil as I’ve ever seen amongst any commentator on any forum – Cold, calculating and utterly without mercy.

  18. Not interested in football, so I don’t know a damn thing about Leicester’s performance. But it’s rather obvious that the ‘collective will’ that binds any team is secondary to the self interest at play in making sure the team is fit to win matches. Much like private companies, really. This is not the communism he’s looking for.
