FRANKFURT— Deutsche Lufthansa AG LHA.XE -1.55% pilots plan to walk off the job on Tuesday, the latest in a series of strikes over retirement benefits at Germany’s flagship airline, the pilot union said on Monday.
Pilots represented by union Vereinigung Cockpit will strike from 0700 GMT to 1500 GMT on Tuesday at Frankfurt Airport, Europe’s third-busiest airport. The strike will affect long-haul flights, the union said.
Guess which bloody numpty is flying, on Lufthansa, through Frankfurt, on Tuesday?

In all my years of travel Frankfurt is one of only 2 places where I missed a plane (to Prague as it happens) because the peasants at Brussels kept our flight Frankfurt on the ground for too long. As we were stuck overnight they put us in a hotel and gave us meal vouchers which were also usable at the bar. We were very well looked after.
The other was a flight from Pune to New Dehli when the engines wouldn’t start. The pilot just said over the intercom, this flight is going nowhere, packed his bag and got off the plane. We were all left to fend for ourselves. Nightmare on steroids trying to get somewhere to stay.

Stuck at Frankfurt by LUFTHANSA, my fellow travellers passed the time by de-acronyming its name & I think the winner was Let Us Fondle The Hostess And Not Say Anything. I recommend the practice (de-acronyming, not fondling) to pass the time.
Well, I’m stuck with them, and these days it is worse than when I was in Milan and stuck with strike-ridden Alitalia. Lufthansa has already lost 9 working days to strikes this year (1 of those admittedly a security strike, not their employees). It won’t be long until the greedy unions have destroyed the company.
I am not looking forward to the “low cost”, point-to-point model that will replace the shattered carcass of the company once the unions of embittered €200,000 a year pilots have finished.
I’m sure the “only ever buys the cheapest deal and will fly at inconvenient times from inconvenient places to save 25p” customers need to be on board to fill otherwise empty seats, but not convinced they are a market worth actively pursuing to the detriment of the rest of the service, the seemingly endless downgrading and abolition of frequent flier perks, and ultimately the existence of the company.

Last time I had a business meeting in Munich we got a cab to the airport after. My colleague who fancied his German asked the taxi driver to take us to the “Luftwaffe”. Fortunately he was Turkish so we all had a good laugh at my colleague’s expense.

I’m sure it’s long since gone. Decade or more. Even the “Hooters” has closed. That said there are dark and forbidding corners I rarely venture to (i.e. Terminal 2).
