Jumped or pushed?

Amongst the things that I did not predict would happen during the course of 2024 was that I would leave the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW). However, I did on 28 March 2024, and they have now indicated that they have accepted that resignation.

No, no, not what he says, but reality?

I suspect those criticisms had something to do with correspondence I received recently from the ICAEW. I have good reason for my suspicion, but although they wrote to me, they never made it clear precisely what they were talking about.

I am also unable to provide too much detail of the correspondence that I have received because they threatened me with the risk of proceedings for professional misconduct if I were to do so, presuming I remained in membership.

Could it be that he asked to be put in charge of spending all the cash and they demurred?

Their reactions were reflected in the language they used. The term ‘Kafkaesque’ was common. The suggestion that this was an attempt to intimidate me was universal. The belief on the part of those I spoke to that the ICAEW was seeking to silence me was, again, universal. Saying that, I should add that all those I spoke to were familiar with past harassment that I have suffered from senior staff working for the ICAEW, to which I have previously referred on this blog.

Ah, yes, that’s FCA Blog who got dobbed in for being hurty to Spud. One of the more vile episodes, that.

Me, my opinion is pushed. You?

I am also unable to provide too much detail of the correspondence that I have received because they threatened me with the risk of proceedings for professional misconduct if I were to do so, presuming I remained in membership.

This doesn’t ring true. How can there be a meaningful threat of being found guilty of professional misconduct if one resigns one’s membership of the professional body in question and no longer practises the profession. In any event the threat would be of proceedings and not of a risk of proceedings.

So the hero of the BB Holdings debacle felt there might be a risk of proceedings if he didn’t walk so he trotted away thinking poisonous thoughts.

  2. So the ICAEW joins the long list of organisations he has fallen out with e.g. the fair tax mark, the tax justice network, the Labour party, etc.

    “CPD”

FWIW, that was my first thought, wandered over to look, to see James’s comment. He’s been critical of the ICAEW for years, hence, does it pass the smell test that they’ve only decided now to push this to a head? I’m not doubting at all what Spud says specifically in the blog post (it’s quite vague), but it’s just as feasible that any provocation (at this point) is the other way?

  4. In fairness to Spud, it shouldn’t be any loss to him… If he’s not actively practising, he probably wasn’t getting much benefit from being able to put three extra letters after his name. But could easily have achieved that without any fuss.

  5. Once Sheffield university tire of his teaching he will have nothing left and will be plain old Richard Potato.

His attitude is the same whatever organisation he’s ever been a part of, pub he’s sat down in or room he’s walked in to – he is the smartest and most knowledgeable man there and if you disagree you will face his wrath – you fascist

  6. Haw Haw Haw! Cvnt!

I suggest he should take up a new hobby, like painting sh1t watercolour landscapes “of no artistic merit” depicting the countryside around Ely.

  7. Section 7 of the ICAEW Fitness to Practice Regulations states that the member being investigated may offer to resign and the “Fitness to Practice Committe Chair” may decide to agree with the resignation.

Prof Murphy says that his resignation has been agreed.

When I quit my institute my resignation was barely noticed, let alone “agreed to”.

I infer no conclusion from this, except to say that “Your are not allowed to resign if an investigation is underway” seems to be an oversimplification, at best.

  8. As of now, he’s not updated the About page on his blog and it still suggests he’s a member.

    And, with supreme irony

Their loss Richard. If they can’t take informed criticism from within it doesn’t say much for them does it?

  9. I’m aware of an anonymous complaint about his conduct, identifying multiple breaches of their code of conduct – integrity, objectivity, competence and due care and respect for others – was submitted to the ICAEW.

Allegedly they didn’t find any breaches, but perhaps this is their way of dealing with it informally, rather than having to go through the formal process.

So . . . now that he’s resigned (and I don’t understand the ‘they accepted my resignation’ – unless you’re a slave they don’t really have that choice, do they) he can tell all, right?

  11. Hmm, just popped in here as I wondered if there would be some informed, intelligent criticism about Murphy’s work. Thanks all for quickly clearing that up.

  12. If he wanted to avoid CPD requirements then surely he’s old enough and far enough from practicing he could have just applied for retired member status.
Obviously you couldn’t write a conspiracy theory blog alluding to dark forces about taking that route

If you want to read criticism of his work, try reading a thread that’s addressing his work. This one is merely snarking and making less-than-totally-founded speculation about his recent dealings with ICAEW.

    Unapologetically, I might add,

  14. His own claims don’t stack up and we know that he lies on his website frequently, so it’s certainly fair to speculate on the real reason his resignation was ‘accepted’.

“… they have now indicated that they have accepted that resignation …”

    I bet they were devastated.

There’s been well – informed criticism on this blog of his work for well beyond a decade. He has banned every commentator on here on Twitter and TRUK as we have all exposed him for the complete ignoramus that he is too many times to count, I thought it was almost impossible to get booted out of the ICAEW but they have delivered. His fraudulent accountancy qualifications are out there,. Sorry to burst your bubble,

  17. Yes, resigning when you could easily claim retired status based on age and lack of professional employment does raise alarm bells
